"We don't have to plan for a rebuild. But all 30 teams have to stay agile, and have to understand that we're dealing with human beings, and these assets to organizations are human and change and evolve. I think what we've tried to do is become more flexible and agile, and to sustain championships is to build from within."

Who does everyone got as the best and worst picks?

I guess i'd go with A.J Puke # 5 as the worst pick. Followed by Lourdes Gurriel @ 8.

Best pick..obviously super biased but i think Rutherford at 19 was crazy good value but not considering i had to give up a first, second and third to get the pick.

    5. Ian Anderson, rhp |

    image: http://www.baseballamerica.com/wp-co...o_icon_red.png
    bba_video_icon_red

    Born: May 2, 1998. B-T: R-R. Ht.: 6-3. Wt.: 170. Drafted: HS—Clifton Park, N.Y., 2016 (1st round). Signed by: Greg Morhardt.

Background: Anderson attracted attention in the Metropolitan Baseball Classic prior to his junior year and began to take off when he pitched against 2015 first-round pick Garrett Whitley the following spring. Despite battling pneumonia and a minor injury during his senior year, Anderson ranked high on the Braves’ 2016 draft board from the outset, and Atlanta drafted the lanky, projectable righthander third overall and signed him for a below-slot $4 million.

Scouting Report: Anderson possesses the classic combination of current ability with the potential to become even better with experience and physical development. A cerebral pitcher who was a Vanderbilt commit, he has impressed with his calm, mature approach and ability to dissect the strike zone with his impressive command and ability to work both sides of the plate. He throws all three of his pitches from the same release point, which makes them difficult for hitters to decipher. His fastball sits at 92-94 mph and has touched 97. He also throws a late-breaking curveball, with above-average potential and 10-to-4 shape at 79-81 mph and a plus changeup in the mid-80s.

The Future: After spending his pro debut at Atlanta’s two Rookie-level affiliates, Anderson will open 2017 at low Class A Rome, where he can expect to spend the entire campaign. From there he has the ability to move quickly as he develops into a mid-rotation starter at the big league level.

I like the Cal Quantrill and Ian Anderson picks. I think I'll hold off criticizing any, but there's definitely some I think went too high.

I like the Quantrill and Cozens picks the best. The funny thing about Cozens is that the Cards passed on him several times for what to my eyes seemed like less obvious options so I figured he was mine. Kind of seems like he just sort of fell to them. The Juan Soto pick surprised me but it really shouldn't have. I like him better than most of the players drafted. I actually like the Lourdes pick. I think people are sleeping on his upside.

Damnit, I'd hoped either Thaiss or Anderson would fall to me.

Second round should be pretty wide open. I'm very curious to see who gets drafted and who slips through.

    6. Forrest Whitley, rhp | bba_video_icon_red

    Born: Sept. 15, 1997. B-T: R-R. Ht.: 6-7. Wt.: 240. Drafted: HS–San Antonio, 2016 (1st round). Signed by: Noel Gonzales

Background: Like many top high school pitching prospects, Whitley went from nothing to something after a growth spurt. A sub-six-feet freshman, he gained six inches and 15 mph before his sophomore year, but it wasn’t until he shed baby fat that he emerged as a potential first-rounder. Whitley went to the Astros 17th overall in the draft.

Scouting Report: Whitley has the plus-plus fastball you expect from a first-round high school pitching prospect. He sits 92-94 mph and touches 97, and his fastball generates swings and misses due to its excellent life. But unlike many young power pitches, Whitley has three secondary pitches that he has confidence in. His curveball is a plus downer and was the pitch Whitley focused on in his pro debut, but some scouts believe his high-80s power slider could end up being even better. He threw it only once or twice a game as a pro, but it was his go-to weapon in high school. It lacks massive depth, but Whitley makes up for it with velocity and late movement. His changeup is advanced for a power pitcher his age.

The Future: The path from the draft to the big leagues for high school righthanders is rarely a straight road, but Whitley’s plus stuff and advanced control give him the building blocks to be a front-of-the-rotation starter. He should pitch at low Class A Quad Cities in 2017.
