Yeah, this. If Edwin had signed elsewhere and the other options disappeared as well, then what? From the Jays perspective you have to be aggressive if a fit is available to you that you like, which Morales was. From Edwin's, you have a big offer on the table in the city you want to play in, and you turn it down because your agent wants to stroke his ego a little or whatever?

Really last I checked it's month and a half to pitchers and catchers reporting and no real work has been done this offseason.

Unless of course the plan is to have Upton and Pompey in the outfield

Then we are right on track

There was a report that came out from Edwins camp that the agent was surprised the Jays moved on so quickly off of Edwin when we signed Morales... that explained everything for me. EE's people were probably holding out for a better deal from Toronto or another team, and by the time they realized that we had the best offer the door was already shut. I guarantee you if we didn't sign two players capable of playing 1B/DH we'd probably sign Edwin, but there's no space for him on the roster after the moves we made.

Its an unfortunate situation but at the end of the day the vast majority of the blame lies with his agent. The FO gave him which turned out to be the best offer and a deadline. The agent gambled and lost when the FO made true and went with plan B. The FO correctly estimated the market while his agent screwed up and to think that goof will make more money off this failure than most of us will make in our lives....

If I were to assign blame its 60% on Kinzer/E5 and 40% Jays FO

They got too greedy, but the Jays could have waited a week at least.

Revere to the Angels for 1 year 4M and only a 2M guarantee for Alex Avila from Detroit.

I guess that's not bad. He'll most certainly be their fourth OF behind Calhoun, Maybin, and that other guy.

Would have like Avila, but I guess Detroit is more attractive than playing behind Martin.

Cleveland isn't that bad of a city. I wouldn't personally live there, though there are some fun parts to the city where its worth going down for a weekend for some baseball games. As well, its not like Edwin is living there all year. Maybe just around 100 days.

Avila would have been nice, though like you said he probably has more playing time in Detroit, plus his dad is the GM.

Would you sign Pillar to that exact same deal?

You can make the case Pillar will lose a ton of value when he loses a step but if you are only paying him to be a 1 win player when he's 32 I think that's a fantastic deal. Plus he's got some potential with the bat so if he ever breaks out you could really have a steal.

And while making moves for PR reasons is a bad strategy, I think a move like this would make fans really happy. Pillar is one the biggest fan favourites on the team.

I hear he has a close relationship with the GM as well.
