So you do care. Why don't you sponsor a family then?

According to Franklin, they need to be accepted automatically for the application process to be fair.

I've never understood why people do this. Why not help out a family member instead, or the homeless man down the street?

Geez... it's not like they don't actually get 25 cents on the dollar. But the legit reason is it's a lot easier to do it that way and still feel good. Otherwise it could get complicated if the people you know want more than you're giving or need some other sort of help. Or if there's some reason you need to cut them off (like if you're doubting where the money is going, or if you just don't want to give anymore) it could be uncomfortable

So, what I meant was, how can you be so sure they will have any reasonable chance of gaining permanent residency?

I would be much more likely to help out the refugee than the homeless man on the street. The refugee might be a productive person who just drew the short end of the stick when it came to being born in a bad part of the world. The homeless man is either lazy, has a mental health issue, drug problem or some kind of other defect where I am not qualified nor do I care to help out, and my effort would be wasted. The refugee could be a life long ally and I could learn something from their culture and experiences. I think most people who engage in housing refugees go into it with some kind of expectation along those lines.

The family member example is strange. Anyone with the wherewithal to house refugees probably already has done everything they can do for their family member and/or doesn't have any family members in need.

A friend of mine from Lebanon that I went to high school and university with, who himself came to Canada as a refugee from the 1980's Lebanese civil war, and suffers from post traumatic stress syndrome due to his experiences as a child in Lebanon during the war, reached out to me and others to sponsor (support mainly) a Syrian family that he was connected with. So I have helped out with some money, clothes, some furniture. Not a big deal, really.

My friend works for the World Bank enforcing contracts the Bank has with countries around the world. Typical of immigrant and refugee families, they work hard to succeed.

Not quite as much oomph when you're trying to brag about your virtuousness at a cocktail party.
