That seems like a pretty good offer for an expiring contract.
Very surprising that Epstein would give up all that. If he is, Jays need to be shopping JD to the cubbies asap.

Yeah because they're really scuffling for a 3B right now.

Part of being a front end starter is durability and the ability to go deep into games. Brandon Morrow is not a top of the rotation arm.

I'd argue Morrow is quite stretched out after that playoff run.

He's never been healthy or durable and he's almost 34.

Morrow at his best probably performed at about a #3 starter level, ignoring durability. It's nice to see him now transfer that ability to the closer's role, but let's not try to suggest he's a top of the rotation guy even if healthy.

He was Jays top of rotation guy for a few years.

That doesn't mean anything, other than we needed more pitching really badly.

The Marlins top starter next year is probably Straily. That doesn't mean you'd consider him a #1 starter.

To be fair to Jim, in 2010, Morrow was on pace for 5 WAR/200 innings, 3.6 WAR/200 in 2011 and 3.9 WAR/200 innings in 2012. That's basically the same as Stroman in 2014, 2016, 2017. I think those are #1/#2 numbers.

That said - I think it's a stretch to think Morrow would still be a top of the rotation guy in 2018.

I'd take Happ + Almora for JD. Cubbies could play Bryant in the OF and JD at 3rd. Then deal Pillar to the Giants when they fail to land Billy Hamilton.

One interesting wild card in the Nationals’ attempts to keep Bryce Harper beyond 2018 could be his older brother Bryan Harper, MASNSports.com’s Byron Kerr writes. The elder Harper, who just turned 28, is a left-handed reliever who posted strong numbers in 2015-16 for Washington’s Double-A and Triple-A affiliates, with good splits against left-handed batters. The southpaw is preparing to return to the mound after undergoing Tommy John surgery in October 2016, and there’s at least a chance he could join his younger brother on the Nats roster this season.
