    Pets Thread

We don't have one of these. I'm planning to become a bigger pet owner in the coming years and thought it might be cool to start a thread. Currently, I have 3 cats, all boys:

    Meowth:

    Momo:

Screamer (Dumb name but I didn't pick it):

Last guy is kinda fat but that's the fault of my inlaws. We got him a few weeks ago because they went on a trip and had me look after him and now they are making all kinds of excuses to have him stay here longer so we said fuck it and kept him. Switched him over to a wet diet recently so he's losing weight at a comfortable pace.

I'm also intensely interested in starting a collection of invertebrates in the near future, particularly tarantulas. And I'm afraid of spiders! So in my research in this venture, I discovered a lot of really, really stupid laws. I'll show some species I want later on.

Feel free to share. Or just awkwardly leave me as the only post. Up to you! Baseball sucks right now.

I put my cat down because of diabetes earlier this year. I hope this helps.

I honestly have so many conflicting emotions right now. Sadness, annoyance, desire to punch you in the nuts, desire to give you a heterosexual man-hug.

I'll leave it at: My condolances, good buddy. Was it eating dry food, by chance?

Yes. I understand now that there is far too many carbs in dry food for animals that don't need any carbs.

Thanks, and I'm sorry you learned about the danger of dry food too late.

I'd like a pet pig for my next pet, but the bylaws in Toronto forbid it.

Also, if anyone is looking for a cat, we picked up a stray that is very friendly, but he gets bulled by our two bigger cats a lot, and we need to find a new home for him.

My dog had a massive heart attack and died in my arms in late May; I wouldn't wish that experience on my worst enemy. I had her for my entire 20s and we had many good years together. I'm sure I'll get another dog some day, but not any time soon.

Really? I thought small pigs were becoming pretty common as house pets?

Yeah that was a super cereal post. She had a heart murmur that progressed over the years, so in the back of my mind I always anticipated it could happen. Some days I feel guilty that I don't mourn her enough. Mostly it's just easier to repress the memory.

I've found that pets dying feels a lot like it does when loved ones die, with the big exception being that you get over it much faster.

This thread has become very depressing.

I did get over it relatively quickly, at least over the grief. Coincidentally I moved the next week, so I think it helped a lot to not have to live where it happened.

I appreciate doggos even more now.

Really? I went to the pet expo at the international centre last weekend and there was a lady walking around with her pet pig. That's in Mississauga but still. What if you moved to Toronto?

Some bylaws are so retarded. Even some federal laws are retarded. For example, in Canada, it is ILLEGAL to own, import or export any foreign invertebrate that consumes plant matter. So, you go to an exotic pets show to find that no tropical millipedes, mantids, beetles or cockroaches are being sold.

Here's the really dumb thing. Let's say you have a collection of invertebrates and/or reptiles. It is illegal to keep one of the most beneficial feeder insects out there, the Dubia cockroach. These roaches are from Argentina, big, slow, can not fly, can not scale smooth surfaces, need 30 degree heat with high humidity to breed and move fairly slowly. It IS legal to keep as feeders German cockroaches that can scale smooth surfaces easily, can thrive in our environment, move quickly and are almost certain to escape. To top that, getting clean specimens (no mites or other parasites) is pretty difficult. So one species is certain to infest your home because they will escape at some point, and the other you'd have to try really hard. Which one is illegal? A note: owning Dubia roaches is perfectly legal in Southern California.

Then, in Ottawa (and now Winnipeg), here is the bylaw:
    a. all venomous spiders including but not limited to tarantula, black widow
and solifugid, scorpion, save and except the exception of the following
species of tarantula: Chilean rose (Grammostola rosea), Mexican redknee
(Brachypelma smithi) and pink-toed (Avicularia avicularia); and
    b. all venomous arthropods including but not limited to centipede.
Why were these three species chosen? What makes them so special? Sure, they are known to be mostly docile but there are far more consistently docile spiders than the Rose Hair. People who make laws have no idea what they're doing. They also even got the species of the red-knee wrong (Brachypelma Hamorii)

We pay like freakin $50 a bag for some kind of specialty cat food to prevent further urinary issues but at least the 1st ingredient is meat.
