Doesnt surprise me, but what would an extension look like for him? He has what, 3 years of control left? If we offered 6-7 years, could we get him for less than 20mill AAV?

I would never sign a pitcher to a contract extension when we have 3 years of control still left.

It is risky, but if it means we could extend him for 6 years 100 million instead of waiting two
more years and extending him for closer to 30mill per year, Id consider it. Id risk it with Stroman, but would wait it out with someone like Sanchez because of the blister. Id want to see a huge bounce back next year before Id even entertain the idea of extending him.

No doubt, as said it's risky with arms. Somewhere in the 16-18M range. I'd be open to that.

Sanchez wouldn't talk extension, not with Scotty as his agent...

This is also how you never end up with Chris Archer type deals. There's a lot of risk and a lot of reward, you just gotta determine which one has more weight towards the future.

Well if Stroman would sign for 6 years and 25M with 2 team options (LOL) then ya I would do that. I don't think any SP will ever sign a deal like Archer's ever again though.

There's actually no risk if Stroman wants to sign an Archer deal. But I think when we talk about realistic extensions for SPs, we're talking minimum 80-100M total nowadays.

If you just use up every young SP you have and then trade them for Dustin Fowler, Kaprelian, Mateo over and over again you probably come out ahead in the long run IMO.

I like the Astros/Cubs style of loading up on as many position players as possible and then finding SPs somewhere. If you look at all their SPs, none have been extended or signed for big deals except Lester. You got Arrieta, Hendricks, Lackey, McCullers, Keuchel, McHugh, Morton and finally Verlander (modest trade) and Lester.

Who's said he was over-rated? Oh... D52/bill/gbill/clevelandsteamer/shart amongst many other monikers, he doesn't count, that's bait.

Stroman is not a 30 million per year pitcher by a long stretch so it's not really worth worrying about

he might not be worth 30, but he's worth more than Santana and he got 20 mil per year for 3 years.

Carlos Martinez last year bought out 3 years of arbitration plus 2 more at $3.5, four years of $11.5 and two team options at $17m and $18m

Ignore the $3.5 first year as Carlos was not a Super 2. Wouldn't 4 years $54M with a $20M option be fair.
