Complimenting doesn't exactly scream confidence. Complimenting suggests to me depth not adding an impact everyday player which we need in either LF or RF. Like I said I'm not trying to read to much into the words but the fact that he said hes comfortable with our outfield situation kind of bothers me. Our Outfield situation sucks.

I noticed a surprising number of Olivares fans kind of lamenting the trade on twitter. I don't really understand it.

I get that he has a broad skill set but nothing seems to really stand out. His offensive numbers are fine but they don't even really scream "prospect" to me.

He was 32/100 qualified MWL batters by age. He was 22/100 by OPS. That's enough to float my prospect list boat, sure, but really not enough to make me care about trading him for a useful MLB piece.

And Solarte seems like such a nice, flexible asset. Conservatively, it's 3 WAR over the next 3 seasons in a heavy UTIL role, for $17.625M. If he tanks they can cut him and save $8M on the last year for a negligible buyout. But even if it's 3 WAR in 3 years that's a bit of surplus value.

And the upshot is probably something like 6 WAR in a starting(ish) role in the next 3 years. Significant surplus value!

I am just having trouble seeing any argument that the trade isn't a no-brainer.

    I would bet on Solarte/Pearce-Pillar-Teoscar

    AAA: Alford, Pompey, Gurriel

Rest of money spent on pitching.

Mayyyyyybe Carlos Gonzalez if he comes cheap.

Sounds like Atkins has an open mind to it...

"We'll see," Atkins said when asked if Travis would switch positions to ease the logjam. "I think first and foremost, we are focused on Devon's health. He is one of the better second basemen in the game when he is healthy, and once we get him to that point and see how the rest of our lineup takes shape, then we'll determine how we start to prepare guys for their playing time in the season. There's still work to do in our offseason."

    Eric Longenhagen

Lots to like about Edward Olivares. Good frame, plus run, plus arm, plus bat speed, swing has natural loft. His feel for CF and for hitting are raw. Expands the zone, has issues w/ breaking ball recog. Boom or bust type, bat most influential developmental variable.

Someone called Jared Carkuff is the 2nd player sent to the Padres in the trade. A reliever apparently.

Usually the majority on here are salivating over the prospects they dream about acquiring by trading off our best players. It's funny to see people to discount our own prospects.

And we are competing with teams that acquire The HR king Stanton for scraps, and Resigned CC and were MILES better in all areas then us before the off season began.
Team needs an upgrade on Zeke if LF. Nice guy, ok player. it is just we have too many OK players in the OF. Need a MASHER!

Olivares is not on the calibre of an Alex Reyes

Atkins on Blue Jays outfield: “We feel like we could start the season with the outfielders that we have. But we’ll definitely look to see if there’s a way to upgrade or complement in our outfield.”

That's called a negotiating tactic. They aren't going to publicly say "We absolutely need to sign an outfielder", it's all posturing. They know they need OF help if they actually want to contend for a WC spot next season.

Atkins has done a good job shoring up the infield without spending too much money on it. Now they need an OF, and a SP, and have around 20M left budget wise, if I'm not mistaken.

Hernandez/Alford and maybe Pompey in play for the last OF spot, and Maile, McGuire, and Jansen in play for the backup C spot. The bench actually looks good.
Add in a low risk bat like Carlos Gonzalez and I'd call that a pretty successful offseason on the offensive side of things. I'd still like to add a SP or two and tinker with the bullpen.
