1 year of an injury prone player for $23M..... how much trade value? Not a lot.

An offseason extension is awfully unlikely at this point.

Yeah this basically removes any chance of signing an extension before opening day.

Option 1: hope he stays healthy and the Jays are clear sellers near the deadline so they can trade him for a return that is better than a comp pick in the 2019 draft.

Option 2: hope he's healthy, all of Boston and New York players get stricken with polio and can't play in 2018 leaving the door open for the Jays to make the playoffs, and then lose Donaldson for nothing more than a comp pick in the 2019 draft.

Option 3: hope he's healthy and signs a team friendly extension for 4 years max.

Option 1 is really the only likely scenario here

I think this sets up a trade deadline deal.

Can anyone explain why this is considered a record arbitration deal, when he avoided arbitration?

Just a record contract for someone who is arbitration eligible.

Would this would make Donaldson the highest paid player in Jays history over the course of a single season?

I believe that honor goes to Vernon Wells.

Wells as a Blue Jay was “only” paid a high of $21m, as we traded him in his more expensive 2011 year. So technically if JD stays all year he’ll be the highest paid Blue Jay.

What was he expected to win in arbitration

23M would have been record setting, no??

Projected surplus value is $30-45M for this year alone. Still worth a Top 10-20 prospect just for 2017 alone, not including playoff value.
