projected surplus value based on zero health issues, which is unlikely

He was a 5 win player in 113 games last year Jim. This deal is almost guaranteed to have a ton of surplus value even if Josh only plays half the year. Come on Jim.

He has trade value just not as much as some on here think, is the point. Dinger's assessment is not bad, its much less than the Reyes ++ suggestions.

It's kinda sad realising this is the last year of Josh Donaldson. And we may not even have him for the full year.

Three years of JD felt like a blur, while three years of Morales will feel like a damn eternity.

Curious to see if the Jays FO thinks they'll be able to get him next off season for cheaper than now. Much like the JB and EE situation perhaps the player wants to test the FA market and only will forego that opportunity if paid top dollar.

Next offseason there are going to be lots of other marquee FA and the glut of 3rd baseman on good teams is still going to be there.

Probably not as sad as paying him $30M for his age 39 season when he's a broken down sub-2 WAR player. Meh, all good things must end eventually. We all love Donaldson but it's not very prudent to give a $200M contract to a player going into his age 33 season, even if he's been an MVP level player the previous 5 years.

My thoughts exactly. The third year really was the killer. It's not unreasonable to think we could trade him next off-season. But we are stuck with him for now.

This is a good point and that's probably what they are thinking at this point. All they really can do is wait it out. Hes going to be 33 paying him a premium right now doesn't make sense when teams will be hesitant to sign him to a 5+ year deal.

If Donaldson finishes the year with a typical great season (5-7 WAR), then what it will come down to is whether another team is willing to offer him more than four years. I think Shatkins will go four years (age 33-36), even factoring some decline in there. But anything beyond that and I doubt it. A Five year deal for a 33 year old is a huge risk. That one extra year makes a difference.

Really hope we trade him before the season starts. Even better would be if we eat most of his contract.
We'll get a haul of prospects to match up with Vlad and Bo.

Alternatively, we could keep him for the whole year, finish well out of the playoffs, and a get a 2nd round pick in compensation.

Looks like we're probably going with Plan B.

Thanks for confirming that Josh Donaldson has trade value. We were all wondering how much of that 23M we'd have to eat to move him.

I think a lot of people would've preferred to move him before the season (myself included) but that just wasn't realistic. All we can do now is hope he stays healthy and puts up big numbers through July.

Jim, what is wrong with you? You really have no room to keep calling Trump out for blurting stupid shit.

If you look back to my posts from a few months ago, i had Reyes and Gyorko as the return. Reasonable, a bit on the high side.

Also, I have as much right to participate on this board as anyone else. FYSMC.
