There are actually ~187 days in the MLB regular season. So if a player is up for 172 of them, they are deemed to have played a full year.
A player with 6.000 years of service time (or more) becomes a free agent.
If a rookie breaks camp with the team and play 6 full seasons, at the end of season 6 they'll be at 6.000 years of service.
If a team keeps a rookie down for just a few weeks in year one, then they might be at, say 5.170 in service time at the end of "year 6" and the club will end up getting 6 years and 170 days of the dude's life.

If Toronto does this with Vlad so blatantly he will probably become part of a growing labour grievance
Teams are pretty blatant about it though, and have been for a while. The Cubs did it with Kris Bryant in 2015, and the Braves are doing it with Ronald Acuna now. Teams will take any advantage they can.

Ronald Acuna is mired in a brutal slump in the minors. I think that the Braves will wait even longer.

Point 3, ok, but then a lot of knowledgeable baseball folks have expressed skepticism about the Jays chances.
so who do you think we could trade Donaldson again? Who's going to get us the best prospects.

Donaldson may have a down year in which case you are better of offering him say 4/100, which is more than any other team will offer.

I wouldn't have a plm whatsoever moving him to the Yankees if the Jays are floundering at .500 or under at the break. Yankees would surely pay a reasonable rent to upgrade 3B
