    Morales - DFA time?

Lets be honest here people, he is holding this team back from being better. To many games where we could slot a more athletic player into the DH spot for a day off yet, still bat. However, our blue jays have alway been a team that looks at it as lost money to DFA a guy they still owe money. Its time they look at it as creating WINS by doing whats right to make this team the best iT could possibly be with the assets we have EACH DAY.

Yay, we sent travis down, step one, send the message that if you don't perform, someone else will. DFA morales when Donaldson comes back.

    1. Yes he needs to be DFA and will be soon

    2. Travis wasn't sent a message other than you have options so we need pitching...see you in 2 weeks
See the ball and let it fly, Watch the ball soaring through the sky, Higher like a comet in the night air, Defying gravity is rare, Let the ball fly, Its homerun time!!!!!

I agree but apparently we are in the minority.

You think the only message to Travis was we need pitching and you have options? Sorry, that is incorrect.

I am on board with this. The team would be further ahead by cutting him, eating the money and going with other options already on the team. I know it sucks eating cash, but it's better to pay him not to play for us so the spot may actually return positive wins to the team. Paying for negative wins is the only result we're going to see with Morales still in the lineup.

Fire him into the sun. He gets his $33M, no point in crying any tears for him. He got fat and old and forgot how to hit. Tough titty.

Yeah that is true. The only thing worse than paying 20 million for 0 WAR is paying 20 million for negative WAR.

The reality is that Josh Donaldson should probably DH a lot this year. Morales getting DFA is slowly moving from a nice-to-have to a necessity.

Yup. He's toast and is a roster management nightmare.

Seems like a good guy, but move on.

I suspect this is the move. But there's no need to DFA Morales today. If Smoak blows out his knee tomorrow or JD has a setback and requires season ending surgery, then we'll probably need Morales (although if a or b happen, we're probably fucked either way).

Don't forget, when we DFA him, there will be absolutely no trade suitors and no one would even consider taking on his contract, so we will be able to outright him to AAA. He's not going to retire and walk away from that money, so we will be able to keep him in the organization in case Smoak or Pearce gets hurt. As soon as Donaldson is healthy enough to DH for the Jays, Morales needs to go.

Steve Pearce is serviceable at 1B.

It's just a depth thing. People are calling for Grichuk to be DFA'd too - but injuries happen and you need to be prepared.

As the Dr. says though, if nobody is going to take Morales's contract, then he probably remains a depth piece in AAA.

Yeah and he is hitting. Both he and Grundy come off the books after this year, but for now, both are contributing in many facets.

    Morales contributes how?

I don't think Morales can be assigned to the minors.

"Also, if the player has five or more full years of major league service, he must give consent to be assigned to the minors. If the player withholds consent, the team must either release him or keep him on the major league roster. In either case, the player must continue to be paid under the terms of his contract."

I doubt that he would give his consent, so the Jays would just have to release him after a DFA. I still think this is the right move though, as he provides no upgrade over anyone on our roster in any facet of the game.
"You want to sit next to Donaldson on the airplane. Sit next to him on the bench. Just rub him off, cause he is smoking hot right now."

Fair enough, although he might accept assignment if he feels that no other team is interested in signing him anyway.
