I saw this in multiple places now. Why 24-27 instead of 24-26?

It's not payroll per se. It's that spending big $$$$ on relievers has never been proven to be a smart route to take.

Chad Green has career 11.6 K/9 nearing 400 innings.

Fap worthy. And so foreign to most Blue Jays relievers. Swing and miss is King.

If they decline that, then Green has a player option for 2024 at $6.25m.

If that's also declined, then the Jays get a 2/21 team option that covers 2024-25.

Pretty convoluted. I'd say the most likely scenario is the Jays turning down the 3/27 option and Green exercising the 2024 player option, but a lot will depend on how Green does in 2023, if he pitches at all. I would think a reliever would be more likely to contribute coming off TJS than a SP like Ryu, so it wouldn't shock me if he shows up in Aug/Sept.
If he comes back healthy, there's a lot of cat and mouse on these options and the Jays come out pretty well in all of them. 3/27M, 1/6.25M or 2/21M are all good terms for the Jays if he's healthy.

But I don't think he accepts the 1 for 6.25M unless he's hurt. That would be a steal for the Jays and perhaps their preferred outcome. If he declines he gets either 2 for 21M or he's a FA, both of which are better than 1 for 6.25M IMO.

I think that might be an error. They were probably thinking 3 years; 24 + 3 = 27. Should be 24-26.

This. The ordering is quite strange. 27/3 is better for the Jays than 21/2 for a 32 year old reliever(his age when the option decisions happen). The only reason you'd accept 21/2 is if he's good and healthy. If he's good and healthy wouldn't you accept the 27/3 so it never gets to the 3rd option?

Yeah, I’d imagine they wanted to make sure his elbow was at X place in the rehab process.. and anything else they may see that would cause red flag

If Green comes back in 2023 and immediately returns to full effectiveness the club will more than likely exercise the 3 year/$27 million option. Green will be paid more like an elite reliever in that scenario.

Technically it just means Toronto waived the condition in the contract that lets them review medicals and spike the deal if they don't like them.
It doesn't mean he passed some health benchmark.

This basically just means he's as injured as they expected him to be. i.e. his arm is still in its socket, no additional broken bones, repaired elbow(?) looks fine, recovery period is what they projected it to be when looking at signing him.

Couldn't they also just check everything else out except for his elbow and sign off saying it all passes, except for the elbow obviously?

My mind isn’t working great. The fiance search is hitting all sorts of snags. I always want what I can’t have and don’t want what I have
