Assume the new structure can fit in the existing number of playoff weeks

Option A is what you said
The two best division winners in each league get a bye in week 1 and then starting in week 2 there is a normal 8 team playoff field. So a 4 week playoffs.
Option B which is perhaps more fun is:
division winners #1 and #2 play each other in week 1 and the winner gets a week 2 bye i.e. a bye straight to the ALCS / NLCS

Maybe I'm misunderstanding, but I don't think that Option B works . After the first week, you would have 4 teams left per league. If you were to give the 1/2 winner a bye, I don't think that the math works on matchups.
Option B - Teams remaining after first week
1/2 Winner (BYE)
1/2 Loser
3/WC3 Winner
WC1/WC2 Winner

Are we really interested in changing our playoff format? Making it easier for teams to get in?
MLB only does it for the revenue. We aren't making money here
