I’m guessing Huberdeau made it be known he’d be testing the market in FA after this coming season. Tkachuk is 5 years younger too, immediately signed an 8 year extension.

Great for them - they got a better player than Tkachuk, + other assets. It's a shame they didn't trade Gaudreau last offseason like they did this year with Tkachuk.

That contract won't age well. But they had little choice. Huberdeau walking wasn't an option for them. They'd be a laughing stock.

There really wasn't a concrete indication that Gaudreau wasn't going to resign with the club. He certainly wouldn't have commanded the type of return the Tkachuk did given the down season(s) leading up to 2021 and far more advanced age.
