    You obviously don't sign the player if you don't think he has upside to be better than Grichuk. You trade Grichuk once the salary cap floor comes in place. Suddenly Grichuk is a hot commodity for teams that need to spend money, but still want to tank.

    You have 4 outfielders to rotate through the DH spot knowing there will be injuries. His play dictates how many ABs he gets.

    This is a good point. The money's probably decent but not much of a chance of a good team. He'd want some exit clauses and no trade controls.
